How did ePayroll come about?

Dean Morelli is founder and Managing Director of Aussiepay, Australia's largest privately owned payroll outsourcer. Dean acquired Aussiepay in 1990, recognising that increasingly companies were looking to outsource parts of their business processes that were too costly or too time consuming to do in house. It soon became evident that in order for Aussiepay to maintain the increasing payroll demands of its growing client base upgrades to the in-house technology needed to be made. Efficiency was the goal and technology was the way to achieve it.

So armed with a team of payroll professionals Dean set out to build his own robust payroll system, one that could provide Aussiepay with an efficient method of payroll processing and also provide his clients with state of the art functionality, productivity gains and above all cost savings. After 16 years, hundreds of satisfied clients and countless man-hours of development later, the Aussiepay payroll system now manages over 20,000 individual employees and processes over $1billion in payroll annually, Now that's a tough application.

So where does ePayroll come in?

After years of refining the in-house payroll system, Dean realised that there was a large number of the businesses that could benefit from the advanced functionality his payroll system could provide.

It would have been relatively easy to take the in-house payroll system, put it in a colourful box and place it on a shop shelf for sale. It was clearly superior in features to what was currently available, but what would be gained by taking a specialist payroll system, designed for use by payroll professionals and placing it in the office of a child care centre, retail shop or any other business where the last thing they want to be experts on is payroll. We agree, not much at all.

As technology helped drive the efficiency of Aussiepay, technology would once again play a major role in the evolution of payroll. The emergence of the hosted software model, that allows software to be delivered as a service through the Internet, made it possible for a business to retain control over the payroll process whilst avoiding the cumbersome, costly and downright unnecessary maintenance that software requires.
